Start with scale

Height is the single most common source of disappointment when buying online. Before ordering, measure the surface the piece will sit on and mark the intended height with a book stack or a tape measure held upright. As a rule, a vase should be roughly one third the height of the wall space above the surface, and stems should add no more than one and a half times the vase height.

Choose materials for the room

• · Ceramic and stoneware: warm, matte and forgiving — ideal for living rooms and bedrooms.
• · Glass: light and reflective, best where daylight can pass through it.
• · Natural stone and marble: weighty and cool; excellent for hallways and coffee tables.
• · Brass: adds warmth in the evening and pairs naturally with candlelight.
• · Oak: grounds a scheme and softens harder surfaces such as marble or glass.

Keep the palette narrow

Our collections sit within a band of white, cream, beige and light stone precisely so that pieces bought months apart still work together. If you are building a scheme gradually, choose two neutrals and one accent material and repeat them around the room.

Group in threes

Odd numbers and varied heights read as intentional; matched pairs read as formal. A reliable trio is one tall vertical piece, one mid-height object and one low, wide element such as a bowl or tray to anchor the group.

Real or faux stems

Fresh flowers suit watertight ceramic and glass vases and reward frequent changes. Faux pampas, bunny tails and eucalyptus hold their shape all year and are the better choice for stone pieces that cannot hold water, or for rooms you rarely use.

Buying candles safely

• · Match the candle diameter to the holder so it sits flat and stable.
• · Choose unscented candles for dining tables so fragrance does not compete with food.
• · Always place pillar candles on a heat-resistant tray or plate.

Buying as a gift
