Care Guide

Looked after properly, decorative pieces improve with age. Here is how we care for each material we sell.

Glazed ceramic and stoneware

  • · Dust weekly with a dry microfibre cloth.
  • · Clean marks with warm water and a drop of mild washing-up liquid, then dry.
  • · Empty and dry vases fully between fresh flower arrangements to prevent water lines.
  • · Avoid dishwashers, which dull matte glazes over time.

Glass

  • · Hand wash in warm water; skip the dishwasher.
  • · Remove cloudiness with a solution of warm water and white vinegar, then rinse well.
  • · Dry with a lint-free cloth to prevent streaks.
  • · Avoid sudden temperature changes, which can crack the glass.

Travertine, marble and natural stone

  • · Dust with a dry soft cloth and blot spills immediately — stone is porous.
  • · Never use vinegar, lemon juice or other acidic cleaners; they etch the surface.
  • · Use felt pads underneath to protect polished furniture.
  • · Do not fill stone vases with water unless a liner is used.

Brass

  • · Brass darkens naturally; many customers prefer this patina.
  • · For a brighter finish, polish occasionally with a dedicated brass cloth.
  • · Remove candle wax only once the holder is completely cool, using warm water.
  • · Avoid abrasive pads, which scratch brushed finishes permanently.

Oak and other timbers

  • · Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry at once; never soak.
  • · Re-oil once or twice a year with a food-safe wood oil to feed the grain.
  • · Keep away from radiators and direct sunlight to prevent drying and warping.
  • · Use coasters under very hot cups.

Candles

  • · Trim the wick to 5mm before each burn to prevent smoking.
  • · Burn for no longer than four hours at a time.
  • · Keep away from draughts, curtains and anything flammable.
  • · Never leave a burning candle unattended, and extinguish before leaving a room.

Faux stems and artificial flowers

  • · Fluff plumes by hand when they arrive; they settle within a few hours.
  • · Dust with a cool hairdryer on the lowest setting or a soft brush.
  • · Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve colour.
  • · Store flat in the original sleeve when not on display.

Plaster and composite wall décor

  • · Dust gently with a dry brush; avoid water on unsealed plaster.
  • · Use appropriate wall fixings for your wall type and check them annually.
  • · Do not hang in bathrooms or other consistently humid rooms.
